Doug Mitchell
I have worked alongside Mingling Tsay for approximately 15 years; most of those years as an English language tutor for many young students hailing from East Asia. Although my position was part-time, it was enriching to work with students with a different perspective. Currently, I am helping the AITEC team with editing documents and letters written in English.
Since 2008, I have worked as a lab technician in the Biology department of Dalhousie University within Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; Dalhousie being a university I graduated from in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology.
As for my personal life, I am married to an Anne Marie Mitchell and we have a four year old (close to being five) daughter named Layla. Other than my family and career, my four main interests in life include sports, movies, music, and travel. Variety is the spice of life.
Heather
Heather loves teaching and learning. As a classroom teacher for 15 years she understands the importance of connections and she values inquiry-based education. Her professional experience spans across Canada from the Arctic to the Maritimes. Heather holds a Bachelor of Science from Dalhousie University, Bachelor of Education from Memorial University, and a Master's of Education from the University of New Brunswick.
As an undergraduate student, Heather worked at AITEC as an English tutor. Ming-Ling’s progressive and collaborative environment nurtured Heather’s enthusiasm and passion for teaching. Working with Ming-Ling and her students was extremely rewarding and allowed for many opportunities to grow - for both students and instructor! Heather is thankful to be working alongside Ming-Ling and her team again.
Heather appreciates opportunities to share and learn from others. She has participated in Project Overseas, delivering workshops to teachers in Barbados, and is heavily involved in STEM education (through her involvement with Canada-Wide Science Fairs and as a member of the Halifax Sci-Tech Expo organizing committee). Heather understands that there is great value in going beyond the classroom and she regularly organizes student exchange trips and cultural tours.
Heather deeply values time spent with her friends and family. An avid music lover, she is often taking in a concert or playing the piano for enjoyment. Heather loves to travel near or far. She recharges by hiking with her dog - and loves to take in the beauty of natural landscapes.
